During World War II, the British Army recorded over 100,000 cases of desertion—but most of these men were not fleeing combat. Many went AWOL while on leave, disappeared in Britain, or blended into civilian life in newly liberated European cities. Unlike World War I, the British military avoided public court-martials and executions. Instead, deserters were quietly removed from pay rolls, hunted by military police, and often punished administratively rather than publicly. Some were caught and returned to duty. Others were never found at all.
