Currently Playing: Black Hole Friday 2021

Happy Black (Hole) Friday! This simulated black hole movie shows what scientists think an accreting supermassive black hole system would look like up close. We haven’t managed to zoom in and focus narrowly enough to examine one in the Milky Way with our own eyes (or radio telescopes)—yet—since our galaxy’s central supermassive black hole is over 25,000 light-years away and highly variable. Simulations enable researchers to understand how black hole systems behave, in theory, and are critical for working out what can be seen. It gets even more exciting when these simulations are used to interpret actual data, like the 2019 image that was derived from M87 data collected by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) network. Feel free to share this and other EHT or @nsfgov (https://www.instagram.com/p/CWvMjWbMmhY/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link) related media at a 100% discount this Black Hole Friday. Offer ends before future null infinity. Simulation by A. Chael, M. Wielgus, D. Palumbo, M. Johnson and K. Bouman
