Currently Playing: The Story of The Headhunter | Path Of Exile 2 Lore

The Headhunter is one of the most sought after items in Path Of Exile 2, and its name is not a metaphor. It is a belt that carried a head, and Path Of Exile 1 records whose head it was on a weathered carving on the Act 1 coast. This is the full story and lore of the Headhunter in Path Of Exile 1 and Path Of Exile 2. Defeat a rare enemy while wearing the Headhunter and you take its modifiers for yourself. That mechanic is Karui theology, printed on the item by Lavianga, the hatungo who advised King Kaom: a man's soul rules from a cavern of bone, the heart is meat, and the head is where the Man is. The Karui put the whole person in the skull, and they believed the strength of the defeated carries forward into the living. Take the head, and you take everything that person was. Kaom carried that belief further than any Karui before him, and the Headhunter is where it ends up. Covered here: how Kaom united the Karui tribes by removing every chieftain too weak to stop him, the Mother of Fire's own ring taken off Akoya of the Tukohama Tribe with the swing of an axe and her head taken along with it, the imperial general Marceus Lioneye who called the Karui savages and then lost the coast to them, the carving that calls the head on Kaom's belt an honour rather than a trophy, and why the Karui still name Kaom the Slayer of Lioneye before any of his other titles. ⚠ Full spoilers for Path Of Exile 1, including the Karui afterlife in the Halls of the Dead. ⚠ Path Of Exile 2 is in early access.
