Yes — and it started as an act of defiance. When the Blitz began in September 1940, the British government banned civilians from sheltering in the Underground, fearing chaos and disruption. But Londoners had other plans. Thousands flooded the Tube anyway, buying tickets, refusing to leave, and forcing the authorities to relent. Soon, the stations became underground cities — packed platforms turned into dormitories, with bunks, first aid posts, food stalls, and even concerts and Christmas parties. By war’s end, over 60 million shelter visits had taken place.
