Hosted by reporter Bianca Dava, this episode tells the story of the 1985 Sinasa massacre in a remote village in Davao City, where dozens of members of an indigenous community died after religious leader Mangayanon Butaog served them food laced with insecticide. Butaog had reportedly promised his followers that the leaves of a tree would turn into money. When that promise failed, some began to question his claimed powers. He later told them that eating a prepared meal would transform them into gods. On September 9, 1985, dozens consumed the poisoned gruel. Five people survived by spitting out the food and pretending to be asleep. Butaog also killed his wife and two children before taking his own life. Contemporary reports put the death toll at 68, including Butaog. “Philippines’ Most Shocking Stories” is a YouTube series from ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs that looks back into real-life events that stunned the nation — stories that made headlines, triggered investigations and sparked public outcry.
