Hosted by ABS-CBN News' chief of reporters Jeff Canoy, this episode tells the story of Kian Loyd delos Santos, the 17-year-old student killed during a police anti-drug operation in Caloocan City on August 16, 2017. Police initially claimed Kian had tried to flee and fired at officers. But CCTV footage showed policemen dragging him into an alley, contradicting their account. Witnesses also testified that Kian pleaded with the officers to let him go home because he had an exam the following day. His death sparked public outrage and renewed calls for accountability in the government’s war on drugs. In November 2018, three police officers, Arnel Oares, Jeremias Pereda, and Jerwin Cruz, were convicted of murder. The case reached another milestone in December 2025, when the Supreme Court affirmed their convictions, ruling that the killing involved treachery and was not justified by the performance of police duties. The officers were sentenced to reclusion perpetua. “Philippines’ Most Shocking Stories” is a YouTube series from ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs that looks back into real-life events that stunned the nation — stories that made headlines, triggered investigations and sparked public outcry.
