Typical joke has a predictable structure with a setup - payoff format. The setup line is a common train of thought with a connector word. The connector word has two meanings. The usual meaning seems inevitable. In the punch line, the joke is like a train that suddenly switches tracks. This creates a tension. In the punch line, the connector word jumps to it's other meaning. This creates a surprise which releases the tension. The release of tension is accompanied with a laugh.
