One of THE most common problems I hear from beginners in this hobby are ammonia spikes/ nitrite spikes, or they will tell me they have very cloudy water, which is typically due to elevated ammonia levels causing a bacterial bloom in the water column. The most important thing to have handy when dealing with high ammonia/nitrite levels is a water conditioner that will render them temporarily non-toxic. This high ammonia or nitrite can immediately cause short-term damage, long-term damage, or death, so it is very important that you have on hand a conditioner that can you can use to save your fish in the meantime while you tackle the root problem. Conditioner is also very important for detoxifying tap water of course. The second most important product to have on hand when dealing with high levels of these compounds is bottled beneficial bacteria. Chronic high ammonia levels can mean that you are overstocked or your tanks are under filtered, but random spikes in ammonia due to instability post large volume water change, instability post filter maintenance (a lot of beneficial bacteria can die when filters are shut off during filter maintenance), accidental over feedings, use of medication that kills beneficial bacteria, unknown sources of decaying matter...etc, can happen to even the most properly filtered and stocked tanks. For this reason, I also believe having extra beneficial bacteria on hand can be very helpful when trying to bring stability to the nitrogen cycle of a system after it's been thrown off.
