The death toll continues to rise following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit western Columbia Monday, causing the collapse of buildings across the region. Residents and rescue workers continue to search through the rubble of collapsed buildings, in hopes of finding survivors. The quake’s epicenter was in San José Del Palmar, a community of about 4,800 people, but it’s impact could be felt for hundreds of kilometres. Colombia’s newly inaugurated President, Abelardo de la Espriella, said that he had personally taken charge of the government’s response to the emergency, telling residents, “you are not alone.” Local officials confirmed that at least 18 people had been killed in the city of Pereira, two in the city of Manizales, and 27 in the Valle del Cauca department, where Colombia’s third-largest city, Cali, is located.
