Currently Playing: Untold connection: Lagrange and ancient Chinese problem

Lagrange interpolating polynomial and an ancient Chinese problem is actually connected! It is a surprising connection, and a very inspiring one at the same time. It tells us that Mathematics has much more to discover! Lagrange interpolating polynomial is normally see as a statistical method, which tries to interpolate the relationship between two variables if we assume the data collected are all error-free, but the principle behind the polynomial is quite easy to grasp, and is related to the Chinese remainder theorem, even though the polynomial is of a somewhat continuous nature, and Chinese remainder theorem is of a somewhat discrete nature. The methods of solving both problems are not only similar in a general sense, but also in a very subtle sense, as discussed in the video. This striking similarity was pointed out by a Chinese book that I read written by the late mathematician Hua Luo-geng, who was a profilic mathematician, and even more notably, promoting mathematics education in China.
