This video mentions an uncited study, but two different supporters have since found it. I would note that many other papers still do find sexual selection as important for peafowl mating, although in at least some cases the preference in peahens is for iridescence and not directly for symmetry, ocellus count, or train length. Their conclusion summary is quoted here, "Combined with previous results, our findings indicate that the peacock's train (1) is not currently the universal target of female choice, (2) shows small variance among males across populations, (3) does not appear to reliably reflect male condition and (4) is perhaps ancestral and static rather than recently derived. Nevertheless, this trait is thought to have evolved and to function for almost exclusively epigamic purposes (Ridley et al., 1984, Petrie et al., 1991; cf.
