Alevtina Soboleva, 59 — an asylum seeker from Sunnyvale, California, with no criminal record — has been in ICE detention since July 20, 2026. In this first interview, her daughter Daria tells the story. Alevtina was stopped at the Buffalo airport before her flight home by plain-clothes officers who called it "a document check." No documents were requested. Within three days she was moved through three facilities across three states, ending at the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Basile, Louisiana — roughly 2,000 miles from her family and attorney. She is sick, and her case still does not appear in the immigration court system, so her bond request cannot even be filed. She entered the U.S. lawfully in October 2021 and has a political asylum application pending since April 2022. She holds a valid work permit and a California REAL ID, and has been an ESL student at Mission College in Santa Clara since 2023. She has no arrests, charges, or convictions of any kind.
