Currently Playing: Rescuing a 1970s Spacecraft in just 3 Months: the ISEE-3 Reboot

The time a crowdfunded group of engineers were able to communicate with and take command of a 36 year old interplanetary spacecraft. The ISEE-3 reboot project was one of the most impressive projects I've ever followed along in realtime....12 years ago I had no idea I'd be telling the story to a wide audience. Many of the source documents i used are publicly available here: https://voyager.gsfc.nasa.gov/Library/ISEE_library.html Some were provided to me through Jacob after going through export control. I am unfortunately unable to share all of those here just in case someone made a mistake somewhere and shared something classified. However, everything discussed in the video is available in public records (usually from the link above). Yes, ITAR is incredibly silly, but no I don't want to accidentally get someone in trouble over a 50 year old spacecraft. Other sources used available here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/q33shl0n6ryk0gukps9qx/isee-3-sources.ods?rlkey=gd9kkuumzkk0uxqejqyjubppu&st=xua63tme&dl=0 The animation for phase shift keying (in the comms protocol chapter) is modified from this one: https://github.com/khoin/PM-visualization 00:00 intro 00:32 Reboot Project Overview 10:23 The most complex orbit ever.
