The 1950s and 60s were a fascinating age of immense technological development - it was imperative that the navies of the world’s forces keep up because of new, terrifying existential threats. The submarine went very quickly from serving the same role as it had in the first and second world wars, simply attacking enemy shipping - to providing a near-undetectable platform to host the world’s most destructive weapons. A world-leader was, of course, the US Navy - but two of the most radical and extreme designs of the time came instead from the Soviet Union. The Lyre and the Shark - known to the western world as Alfa and Typhoon. Alfa, capable of a higher speed underwater than most ships could go above - and the Typhoon, a monster of a submarine longer than a football field - a launching platform of unimaginable destruction. These are two of history’s most impressive, totally unhinged warship designs and the engineering brilliance it took to bring them into solid reality is still impressive more than 50 years later.
