In World War Two, Germany’s pirates hunted across the globe from the raging Atlantic to the vast Pacific, laying mines, sinking ships and just generally causing mischief. Their captains were as unique as their ships - strong commanders with unusual backgrounds and experience well-suited to the often lonely task of operating independently tens of thousands of kilometers away from home. In the spring of 1940, the German navy fitted out a freighter to do just this, single-funneled and ordinary, but armed like a warship within. She would sail alone and stay at sea longer than any warship could. Her name was Atlantis.
