This short explains how a single -layer anti-reflection (AR) coating works. Shown here is an example of an AR-coating with an "ideal" refractive index of 1.22 (for an air -glass interface). Real-world AR- coatings like MgF2 have a refractive index that is far from ideal (1.38). However, by making the layer thickness 1/4 of a specific wavelength of light, one can still reduce the reflection significantly at this wavelength.
