বিবেকচূড়ামণি পর্ব : ৪৭(২১১-২১৪)। সবকিছু নাকচ করলে কী থাকে? গুরু-শিষ্যের অপূর্ব কথোপকথন আলোচনায় স্বামী শঙ্করানন্দ মহারাজ। योऽयमात्मा स्वयंज्योतिः पञ्चकोशविलक्षणः । अवस्थात्रयसाक्षी सन्निर्विकारो निरञ्जनः सदानन्दः स विज्ञेयः स्वात्मत्वेन विपश्चिता ॥ २११ ॥ yo'yamātmā svayaṃjyotiḥ pañcakośavilakṣaṇaḥ | avasthātrayasākṣī sannirvikāro nirañjanaḥ sadānandaḥ sa vijñeyaḥ svātmatvena vipaścitā || 211 || 211. This self-effulgent Ātman which is distinct from the five sheaths, the Witness of the three states, the Real, the Changeless, the Untainted, the everlasting Bliss – is to be realised by the wise man as his own Self. शिष्य उवाच मिथ्यात्वेन निषिद्धेषु कोशेष्वेतेषु पञ्चसु । सर्वाभावं विना किंचिन्न पश्याम्यत्र हे गुरो विज्ञेयं किमु वस्त्वस्ति स्वात्मनात्मविपश्चिता ॥ २१२ ॥ śiṣya uvāca mithyātvena niṣiddheṣu kośeṣveteṣu pañcasu | sarvābhāvaṃ vinā kiṃcinna paśyāmyatra he guro vijñeyaṃ kimu vastvasti svātmanātmavipaścitā || 212 || 212. The disciple questioned: After these five sheaths have been eliminated as unreal, I find nothing, O Master, in this universe but a Void, the absence of everything. What entity is there left forsooth with which the wise knower of the Self should realise his identity. श्रीगुरुरुवाच सत्यमुक्तं त्वया विदन्निपुणोऽसि विचारणे । अहमादिविकारास्ते तदभावोऽयमप्यनु ॥ २१३ ॥ सर्वे येनानुभूयन्ते यः स्वयं नानुभूयते । तमात्मानं वेदितारं विद्दि बुद्ध्या सुसूक्ष्मया ॥ २१४ ॥ śrīgururuvāca satyamuktaṃ tvayā vidannipuṇo'si vicāraṇe | ahamādivikārāste tadabhāvo'yamapyanu || 213 || sarve yenānubhūyante yaḥ svayaṃ nānubhūyate | tamātmānaṃ veditāraṃ viddi buddhyā susūkṣmayā || 214 || 213-214. The Guru answered: Thou has rightly said, O learned man ! Thou art clever indeed in discrimination. That by which all those modifications such as egoism as well as their subsequent absence (during deep sleep) are perceived, but which Itself is not perceived, know thou that Ātman – the Knower – through the sharpest intellect. The Self is described as distinct from the five sheaths (Pancha-kośa) - the physical body, vital energy, mind, intellect, and bliss sheath. It is self-luminous (self-revealing) and does not depend on any other source to be known. The Self is the witness of the three states of experience: waking, dream, and deep sleep. It is unchanging (nirvikāra), pure (niranjana), and of the nature of eternal bliss (sadānanda). A wise seeker should realize this pure Self as his own true identity. A doubt arises in the disciple’s mind: since the five sheaths have been negated as unreal and not the Self, it appears as if nothing remains - only a sense of absence. The disciple asks the Guru: If everything is negated as non-Self, what then remains to be known as the true reality? The Guru replies that the disciple’s reasoning is correct, but he must understand a deeper truth. Even when all objects and mental modifications disappear (as in deep sleep), the witness of their presence and absence still remains. That witness is the Self (Ātman). All experiences - including the appearance and disappearance of ego, thoughts, and perceptions - are known because of this witnessing consciousness. Yet the Self itself is never an object of experience. It is the knower of all experiences, not something that can be known as an external object. Therefore, through subtle and purified intellect, the seeker should recognize this witnessing consciousness as his own real nature. Scriptures also confirm that the Self is hidden in all beings and is realized only by those with refined and concentrated intellect.
