In this enlightening discourse, Swami Sankarananda, the General Secretary of the International Vedanta Society (IVS) continues his deep and lucid exposition on Śrī Ādi Śaṅkarācārya’s Vivekachudamani, the Crest-Jewel of Discrimination. This is Part 33 of the ongoing series, where verses 153 to 156 are discussed in depth — verses that guide a sincere seeker on how to discriminate between the Self (Ātman) and the non-Self (Anātman), the central discipline on the path of Jñāna Yoga, or the Way of Knowledge. In these verses, Śaṅkarācārya unfolds the subtle art of vichara (discrimination) — the very means by which bondage ends and liberation (mokṣa) dawns. The teaching is not merely intellectual; it is meant for direct inner realization through constant inquiry (ātma-vicāra). muñjādiṣīkāmiva dṛśyavargāt pratyañcamātmānamasaṅgamakriyam | vivicya tatra pravilāpya sarvaṃ tadātmanā tiṣṭhati yaḥ sa muktaḥ || 153 || 153. He indeed is free who discriminates between all sense-objects and the indwelling, unattached and inactive Self – as one separates a stalk of grass from its enveloping sheath – and merging everything in It, remains in a state of identity with That. deho'yamannabhavano'nnaMāyāstu kośaḥ cānnena jīvati vinaśyati tadvihīnaḥ | tvakcarmamāṃsarudhirāsthipurīṣarāśiḥ nāyaṃ svayaṃ bhavitumarhati nityaśuddhaḥ || 154 || 154. This body of ours is the product of food and comprises the material sheath; it lives on food and dies without it; it is a mass of skin, flesh, blood, bones and filth, and can never be the eternally pure, self-existent Ātman. pūrvaṃ janeradhimṛterapi nāyamasti jātakṣaṇaḥ kṣaṇaguṇo'niyatasvabhāvaḥ | naiko jaḍaśca ghaṭavatparidṛśyamānaḥ svātmā kathaṃ bhavati bhāvavikāravettā || 155 || 155. It does not exist prior to inception or posterior to dissolution, but lasts only for a short (intervening) period; its virtues are transient, and it is changeful by nature; it is manifold, inert, and is a sense-object, like a jar; how can it be one’s own Self, the Witness of changes in all things? पाणिपादादिमान्देहो नात्मा व्यङ्गेऽपि जीवनात् । तत्तच्छक्तेरनाशाच्च न नियम्यो नियामकः ॥ १५६ ॥ pāṇipādādimāndeho nātmā vyaṅge'pi jīvanāt | tattacchakteranāśācca na niyamyo niyāmakaḥ || 156 || 156. The body, consisting of arms, legs, etc., cannot be the Ātman, for one continues to live even when particular limbs are gone, and the different functions of the organism also remain intact. The body which is subject to another’s rule cannot be the Self which is the Ruler of all. This talk inspires seekers to apply discrimination (vichara) daily — separating the eternal from the transient, the Real from the unreal — until only the Witness, the pure Consciousness remains. Watch this video to deepen your understanding of Advaita Vedānta and learn how discrimination (vichara) leads to direct realization of the Self — the only true Freedom (mokṣa).
