In this video, we cover: Section 8.4: The Role of Enzymes Biological Catalysts: Enzymes are specialized proteins that speed up metabolic reactions without being consumed in the process Lowering Activation Energy (EA): Every chemical reaction requires an initial investment of energy to break bonds. Enzymes function by lowering the activation energy barrier, allowing reactant molecules to reach the transition state even at body temperatures Substrate Specificity: An enzyme is highly specific to its substrate (the reactant it acts upon). The substrate binds to a specific region called the active site, forming an enzyme-substrate complex. The textbook diagrams show how the shape of the active site perfectly complements the substrate's shape, often described as "induced fit" Section 8.5: Regulation of Enzyme Activity Environmental Factors: Enzyme function is highly dependent on local conditions. Each enzyme has an optimal temperature and pH at which its reaction rate is greatest. Deviations from these optima can cause the enzyme to denature or lose its functional shape Inhibition: Competitive Inhibitors: These molecules mimic the substrate and bind directly to the active site, physically blocking the substrate from entering Noncompetitive Inhibitors: These bind to a different part of the enzyme (an allosteric site), causing the protein to change shape and making the active site less effective at catalyzing the reaction Allosteric Regulation: This is a form of control where a regulatory molecule binds to a protein at one site and affects the protein’s function at another site. This can either stimulate or inhibit enzyme activity to meet the cell's metabolic needs.
