These sections take us beyond the basic chromosome-based explanation of Mendelian inheritance and explore linked genes, chromosome abnormalities, and important exceptions to standard Mendelian patterns. 🧬 Section 15.3 — Linked Genes Why aren't all genes inherited independently? In this section, we explore: 🔗 Linked genes 🧬 Genes located close together on the same chromosome 🔀 Crossing over and genetic recombination 🧬 Parental vs. recombinant chromosomes 📊 Recombination frequency 🗺️ Genetic mapping 📍 Using recombination data to estimate gene distance The key idea: Genes located close together on the same chromosome tend to be inherited together. 🧬 Section 15.4 — Chromosome Alterations Chromosomes can change in both number and structure, sometimes producing genetic disorders. We examine: 🔢 Changes in chromosome number 🧬 Aneuploidy ➕ Trisomy ➖ Monosomy 🧬 Nondisjunction 🧩 Deletions ➕ Duplications 🔄 Inversions 🔀 Translocations 🧬 Chromosomal disorders 🧬 Section 15.5 — Exceptions to Mendelian Inheritance Not every inheritance pattern fits perfectly into the classic Mendelian model. We explore examples including: 🧬 Incomplete dominance 🧬 Codominance 🩸 Multiple alleles 🧬 Polygenic inheritance 🧬 Pleiotropy 🌱 Environmental effects on phenotype 🧬 Other exceptions to standard Mendelian inheritance These examples demonstrate why genetic inheritance in real organisms can be much more complex than simple dominant/recessive inheritance.
