The Draugr was no mindless Norse zombie: it remembered every debt, grudge and possession. In Icelandic saga lore, the dead could come home unchanged, and defeating them didn’t always end the danger. The Draugr of Norse lore is frightening because it isn’t an empty shell. It can speak, recognise the living, guard property and carry old grudges beyond the grave. Drawing on Grettis Saga, Eyrbyggja Saga and The Saga of Hervör and Heidrek, this video follows the restless dead through medieval Icelandic storytelling: from Þórólfr Twist-Foot’s refusal to leave his land and Glámr’s terrifying encounter with Grettir Ásmundarson to the barrow-dwelling haugbúi and the dead who behave in far stranger ways. These sagas were written after Iceland’s conversion to Christianity, yet they preserve older anxieties about burial mounds, bodies and unfinished business. What emerges isn’t simply a Viking zombie story, but a disturbing question: if a person returned with their memory, temper and sense of ownership intact, how much of them would really be dead? 🏛️ JOIN THE MYSTICS: Watch new videos early and vote on future mythology topics. 👉 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy6v91210figZrnMvfnhZhw/join ▶️ WATCH NEXT: ↳ ⚔️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikECI8lazL0y80EqDGH_evhNOMGtsHr- ↳ 🐉 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikECI8lazL0W7QESLTLZrYyMAk91giJx 🛒 Mythology Books and Creator Picks: https://www.amazon.com/shop/mysteriesofmythology 👕 Merch: https://mysteries-of-mythology-shop.fourthwall.com/ ——————————————— ⏳ CHAPTERS: 00:00 The Draugr 00:44 The Dead Man Who Remembered You 03:12 Þórólfr and the Grave He Wouldn’t Leave 06:49 Grettir’s Battle with Glámr 09:52 How Do You Stop a Draugr? 11:33 When the Restless Dead Weren’t the Enemy ——————————————— 📚 SOURCES & CREDITS: • Grettir’s Saga – https://morrisarchive.lib.uiowa.edu/items/show/2579 • The Saga of the Ere-Dwellers: Eyrbyggja Saga – https://www.sagadb.org/files/pdf/eyrbyggja_saga.en.pdf • The Saga of King Heidrek the Wise – https://vsnr.org/otherpublication/the-saga-of-king-heidrek-the-wise/ • Grettir’s Saga, Spatial Humanities – https://spatial-humanities.library.utoronto.ca/exhibits/show/text-without-context--context-/grettir-s-saga • Museological Approaches to Pre-Christian Funerals and Old Norse Literature – https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid%3A54d0267b-695b-4280-9bf8-f7db2356d465 • Marianne Hem Eriksen, Doors to the Dead – https://pure.kb.dk/en/publications/doors-to-the-dead-the-power-of-doorways-and-thresholds-in-viking-/ • Kirsi Kanerva, The Restless Dead in Medieval Iceland – https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9781315466859-11/powerful-agents-subordinate-objects-restless-dead-thirteenth-fourteenth-century-iceland-kirsi-kanerva ——————————————— 🔔 SUBSCRIBE → https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy6v91210figZrnMvfnhZhw/?sub_confirmation=1 ——————————————— 🔗 CONNECT WITH ME: ↳ 💬 Chat on Discord: https://discord.gg/erE273UZme #Draugr #NorseMythology #VikingMythology #Grettir #IcelandicSagas #Mythology #MysteriesOfMythology 220826
