The Complete Mysteries of Mythology Collection

Currently Playing: The Doppelgänger: Mythology's Most Terrifying Warning Sign

Doppelgängers are more than people who happen to look alike. In folklore, your double could be part of you. From a woman reportedly seen in two places at once to death omens and strangers in mirrors, the stories become increasingly unsettling. In 1845, French teacher Emilie Sagée was said to have appeared in two places at the same time, sometimes in front of entire classrooms. Her strange case, recorded in Robert Dale Owen’s Footfalls on the Boundary of Another World, became one of history’s most famous doppelgänger stories. But the idea of a human double goes much further back. From the Norse vardøger and Celtic fetch to the Japanese ikiryō, cultures around the world imagined versions of ourselves that could exist separately from the body. We’ll also meet Helen’s impossible double in Euripides’ Helen, examine Abraham Lincoln’s disturbing mirror experience, and look at what modern neuroscience says about people who genuinely see another version of themselves. 🏛️ JOIN THE MYSTICS: Get early access to new documentaries and vote on future mythology topics. 👉 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy6v91210figZrnMvfnhZhw/join ▶️ WATCH NEXT: ↳ The Dark History That Created Bloody Mary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APDv1X_pBPc ↳ 🐉 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikECI8lazL0W7QESLTLZrYyMAk91giJx 🛒 Mythology Books and Creator Picks: https://www.amazon.com/shop/mysteriesofmythology 👕 Merch: https://mysteries-of-mythology-shop.fourthwall.com/ ——————————————— ⏳ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro to doppelgängers 01:03 The Woman Seen In Two Places 06:20 The Double Across History 10:17 The Double As A Warning 12:17 The Other You 14:37 The Stranger In The Mirror 15:58 The Double That Never Existed ——————————————— 📚 SOURCES & CREDITS: • Robert Dale Owen, Footfalls on the Boundary of Another World – https://openlibrary.org/books/OL13499422M/Footfalls_on_the_boundary_of_another_world. • Euripides, Helen – https://scaife.perseus.org/library/passage/urn:cts:greekLit:tlg0006.tlg014.perseus-eng2:0-92/text/ • Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The Autobiography of Goethe: Truth and Poetry – https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/52654 • Blanke & Mohr, Out-of-body experience, heautoscopy, and autoscopic hallucination – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16019077/ • Ionta, Gassert & Blanke, Multi-sensory and sensorimotor foundation of bodily self-consciousness – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22207860/ • Arzy et al., Induction of an illusory shadow person – https://www.nature.com/articles/443287a • Villarejo et al., Mirrored-self misidentification – https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20812138/ • Giovanni B.
