In this video, we explore how Dionysus became the patron of ancient Greek theatre, why the City Dionysia gave rise to the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, and how later traditions linked him with Zagreus, rebirth, and the hope of life beyond death. We also examine his journey into the Underworld to rescue Semele, his Roman identity as Bacchus, the Senate's famous crackdown on the Bacchanalia, and why modern historians question parts of Livy's dramatic account.
