Can high-dose vitamin D really build muscle? Vitamin D deficiency is common, especially in the UK, and correcting it is important for bone health, immune function, and muscle performance. But recently, viral videos have claimed that high doses — even 10,000 IU per day — can rapidly increase muscle, suppress myostatin, and change how your body stores energy. The science is far more complicated than that. In this video, I break down what vitamin D actually does, what the research really shows, and how early-stage science is often presented as something far more definitive than it is. This is partly in response to Thomas DeLauer’s video (linked below), although similar claims are widespread. To be clear, he doesn’t explicitly tell people to take high doses, and he does mention monitoring blood levels. But that’s part of the issue — if something requires regular blood testing to avoid harm, it’s no longer a casual supplement. We routinely monitor blood levels for potent medications because the line between a therapeutic dose and a dangerous one can be very narrow. So if a supplement requires regular blood testing to avoid toxicity, it’s something that needs to be treated with the same caution as a medical treatment, and that's a pretty dangerous game.... The bigger problem is framing. Titles like “10,000 IU Vitamin D Builds Muscle Rapidly” create the impression that more vitamin D equals more muscle, tapping into the desire for quick results while overstating the evidence. Much of the data comes from animal studies at extreme doses, early mechanistic research, and indirect human associations. Useful for generating ideas — but not proof of real-world muscle-building effects in humans at safe doses. I'm not intending to criticise Thomas directly here.... it’s about how research is communicated. When early evidence is presented as fact, people can act on it in ways that aren’t safe. The bottom line: vitamin D matters, and correcting deficiency is important. But pushing levels beyond normal isn’t supported by high-quality human data — and it’s not a shortcut to building muscle.
