Currently Playing: Why the Mongols Never Conquered Europe

The Mongols never conquered Europe, though by the spring of 1241 there was no one left to stop them. The armies of Batu Khan and Subutai had already swept through Volga Bulgaria, broken the Cumans and burned the principalities. From there they moved west in two wings. On April 9 the army of Henry II the Pious was destroyed at Legnica, and the duke was killed with it. Two days later, on the river Sajo, the army of King Bela IV of Hungary ceased to exist. In three days Central Europe lost both forces capable of meeting the invaders in the field, and Mongol scouting parties reached the borders of Austria. In Rome and at the royal courts men expected Vienna, the German lands and northern Italy to fall next. The defeats had nothing to do with a lack of courage. The Mongol army rested on discipline, a decimal command structure, the composite bow and intelligence gathered years before the campaign began. Subutai split his tumens deliberately so that the Poles, the Hungarians and the German princes could never assemble a single army, and the calculation worked exactly as intended. Europe was busy fighting itself: Emperor Frederick II against the Pope, the Hungarian nobility against their own king, the Polish lands divided among rival dukes. What saved the West was not a battle. In December 1241 the Great Khan Ogedei died, and the Chinggisid princes were obliged to return to Mongolia for the kurultai. Supplies in a devastated Hungary were running out, the spring plains turned to mud, and the stone cities of the Empire lay ahead. In the spring of 1242 the tumens withdrew, and Europe never found out how it would have ended. Do you think Europe would have held if Ogedei had lived a few more years? Leave your version in the comments, we read them.
