This time, Rick and Robert are diving into the lyrics of one of the most brutal, personal, and downright uncomfortable songs in Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department: “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” And almost immediately, the boys realize something feels different. Because this doesn't really feel like a song. It feels like a letter. Before we press play, we take a step back and revisit the emotional landscape surrounding The Tortured Poets Department including the end of Taylor's long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn, the whirlwind that was Matty Healy that followed, the Eras Tour happening simultaneously, and the complicated circumstances surrounding the album's creation and release. Then the lyrics start. And Rick and Robert have a LOT to say. We talk about why the opening verse and chorus feel less like traditional songwriting and more like we're accidentally reading something deeply personal that was never meant for us.
