🌙 Taylor Swift’s “Midnight Rain” takes us straight into the sleepless-night side of Midnights, and Rick and Robert have A LOT to say about it. For Part 22 of our Journey to the Eras Tour, Rick and Robert are reacting to the lyrics and lyric video for “Midnight Rain” from Taylor Swift’s Midnights album. We kick things off with some shenanigans, a little Midnights context, and a conversation about the album’s concept of 13 sleepless nights throughout Taylor’s life. We also talk about some of their favorite songs from the album so far, including “Anti-Hero” and “Lavender Haze.” Then we get into one of the biggest questions surrounding “Midnight Rain”: WHO is this song inspired by? Rather than assigning the song to one specific ex or relationship, we break down the different theories and look at the lyrics that seem to connect to different moments in Taylor’s life. The more connections we find, the more it starts to feel like this song is really about the culmination of Taylor’s experiences trying to balance love, relationships, ambition, and the life she chose to build. And then we actually experience the song. Rick and Robert are immediately hooked by the production, and Rick initially doesn’t even realize that the deep voice in the chorus is Taylor herself. Robert catches it right away, leading to a conversation about Taylor’s incredible ability to manipulate her own voice and create something completely different. From there, we dive into the lyrics, the “time travel” section, the infamous “He was sunshine, I was midnight rain” contrast, and the idea of being with the right person at the wrong time. Taylor’s explanation of the song’s duality also gives us plenty to discuss, especially the contrast between chasing dreams and the more traditional life of marriage and children. Rick even brings up "The Family Man" and the idea of wondering what would have happened if you had simply taken a different path. And Robert has a fascinating observation about the meaning of “midnight” that brings the entire concept of the Midnights album into an entirely different light.
