Arsenal didn't begin at the Emirates. They didn't even begin in North London. In 1886, a group of workers at the Royal Arsenal armaments factory in Woolwich formed a football club called Dial Square FC — the club that would eventually become Arsenal. Today, I'm travelling around South East London to find the places where Arsenal's story actually began, from their first ever home on Plumstead Common to the grounds where Woolwich Arsenal played before their controversial move across the River Thames to Highbury. I'll visit the sites of their earliest grounds, discover what remains of the Invicta Ground, and find out how a struggling club from an industrial corner of London eventually became one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
