Currently Playing: E35 - Alcántara Denied ABS Challenge, Craig Counsell Ejected as Dan Merzel Calls Swinging Strike 3

1B Umpire Dan Merzel ejected Cubs manager Craig Counsell for arguing an ABS challenge denial on Kevin Alcántara's strikeout after HP Umpire Shane Livensparger called strike three on the pitch's location, the batter wanted to challenge, but U1 Merzel said he swung anyway. As of 2026, check swings cannot be challenged, rendering the batter's ABS challenge request moot, since even if ABS were to overturn the strike three call (it wouldn't have, the pitch was located within the strike zone), the base umpire's swing call would prevail.
