Frenchmans Track, 1.8m of fast-flowing water and five rigs hanging off a winch. Jock McDonald and Jesse Gleeson take on the Pascoe River and the Wenlock on the run east to Iron Range. Jock is driving the ex-Army Land Rover Perentie built for Young Veterans. Jesse has the BMW-powered GU Patrol on 35s and twin lockers. Behind them, Josh from T.C Boxes in his Ranger, Justin from 4WDetail in a Defender 130 and Liv from Performance Tourers in the D-MAX. The locals reckon the Pascoe is uncrossable this season and nobody has driven this track since the wet. It starts a kilometre in with a lagoon we can't see the end of, and a passing HiLux with a badly sealed snorkel copes a gutful of water through the intercooler and turbo. Turning the engine over by hand pushes it back out the exhaust, and a tow in fifth gear is the only shot at limping it to a mechanic. From there it's soft sand and low tyre pressures at 8-10psi on the Wenlock, bog hole after bog hole, and a silt-filled lagoon where the bow wave stops the Perentie dead and fills the cab to the seat base. Then the Pascoe. Josh walks it across with the recovery gear and the water is over his shoulders, roughly 1.8 metres deep and flowing hard. Winch on the nose, winch on the tail, extensions and soft shackles strung across the whole river, and one rig at a time. The old Landy fills up and sinks to the bottom for traction. The newer rigs don't get that luxury. Out the other side is a wall of mud, a steep climb and every bit of recovery gear in the convoy. The reward is Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park, the old Lockhart River WWII airfield the US flew B-24 Liberators out of in 1942, and a finish on the sand at Chilli Beach.
