OPEN ME!: On April 1, 2016 I published my first YouTube video. 9 years and over 1400 videos later, I'm still making videos every week. But doing YouTube at 44 feels very different than it did at 35 when I started and in today's vlog I'm reflecting on 9 years of making content, building a fantastic online community, and lessons learned along the way. Lessons about YouTube but more importantly, lessons about myself. Some additional thoughts: Since filming and editing this vlog, I’ve continued thinking about a lot of the topics that come up. I’m sorry this one got so long and chatty but I had some really helpful breakthroughs and perspective shifts that will hopefully let me put some of these worries to rest. Hitting 9 years on YouTube at the same time that YouTube is going through some changes and I’m going through changes and when things feel more uncertain than usual, has been challenging to say the least. But being able to talk through these things was so helpful. Ultimately, starting my YouTube channel 9 years ago was the BEST thing, I’ve ever done. I honestly don’t know if I would have been able to finish my PhD or start self-publishing if not for having this space to work through ideas and problems and have the support of this community. You all are thanked in the acknowledgements of my PhD dissertation and in the back of all of my novels. This channel has changed my life in ways I can’t even fully express. YouTube as a business is a game and the rules are always changing and the goal posts are constantly moving. But YouTube as a creative outlet has truly been a miracle in my life. So while I have my moments of doubt and while I question my place here in the broader landscape of newer, cooler, and younger creators, my faith and belief in the power this platform has to change your life is unshakeable. If you have been thinking about starting a channel, do it. Maybe it will go nowhere. Maybe it will be a fun experience for a few months or a few years. Or maybe, just maybe, it will change you in ways you never thought possible.
