Anthony Ryder was born in New York in 1957. Anthony J. Ryder is a painter and art teacher who wrote The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing. He is a contemporary realist who does still lifes and in particular, figure and portrait paintings and drawings, with meticulous attention to detail and superb draftsmanship. His work is based on a synthesis of observation and painting theory. He studied oil painting and figure drawing in New York City and Paris from 1983 to 1989. He studied at the Art Students League of New York, the New York Academy of Art, and the École Albert Defois in France with oil painter Ted Seth Jacobs. He began his teaching career at the New York Academy of Art in 1985, and has taught at the Art Students League of New York and in various locations in the United States and France. His teaching method combines class demonstrations with individual critiques. He opened his own school of painting and drawing, the Ryder Studio, in 2007. He was part of the group of artists who made artworks for the 2010 artbook Star Wars Art: Visions. His artwork was named Pia. His paintings and drawings are in many private collections.
