Have you ever wondered why some artists seem to notice things that everyone else walks right past? The truth is, learning to see has very little to do with talent and everything to do with training your attention. In this video, we'll explore how observation can be developed, why curiosity is one of an artist's greatest tools, and how changing the way you look at the world can dramatically improve your drawings. As we talk, I'll be sketching an ancient temple, showing that every great drawing begins long before the pencil touches the paper, it begins with learning to see. The demonstration that accompanies the video is done with an indigo Prismacolor pencil on printer paper I purchased at Office Depot. It has been sped up to match the length of the audio. The original took around 58 minutes to complete and is just a sketch and not intending to be an instructional video. All the usual steps I teach that make it easier to learn a process are thrown out for the sake of impromptu painting and just feeling the way through it. I hope you enjoy this video, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments. If our paths happen to cross at a convention, workshop, or art gathering someday, I'd love to continue the conversation in person. They are now meeting once a week doing a live drawing class from images, timing them and having a conversation about what they are doing together. They are definitely inspiring me to continue growing the content and growing the community in whatever way I can. Thank you all for participating and pushing each other, as well as pushing me on.
