In Gregg Shorthand, the Vowels are group by similarity in sound. For a short vowel sound (e.g. mit, mat), the vowel is left unmarked. For a medium sound (e.g. met, calm), the vowel is marked with a dot. For a long sound (e.g. meet, mate), the vowel is marked with a short dash. However, you'll notice in Shorthand readings, these markings aren't used very often since the meaning can be inferred from the context of the surrounding words.
