In this real-time blending tutorial we'll paint a little grayscale study of a simplified person in oil paints. Instead of a detailed portrait, we’ll use just an egg shape for the head and a gumdrop shape for the torso. This allows us to focus on "turning the form" with value (lights and darks) to make it feel rounded and three-dimensional. We’ll learn to shade forms and blend paint without getting mushy or losing the value structure that makes the shapes feel solid. Here’s the video where I show how to the gray values from black and white paint: https://youtu.be/p5ZHV4-2dXg Free mixing guide, Patreon, and other resources at https://www.annawakitsch.com/links TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Intro 00:10 - Oil painting paper 00:26 - Procreate study 00:38 - Tonal values 01:23 - Future project 01:42 - Brushes 01:52 - Blending vs Poster 02:24 - Sketch 03:12 - Blocking in 03:29 - Background 05:22 - Shadow 09:43 - Halftone 12:01 - Penumbra 12:38 - Reflected light 13:28 - Light Mass 17:48 - Highlight 19:35 - Blending 27:24 - Ambient light 29:56 - More blending 47:56 - Edges 56:02 - Occlusion shadow 57:37 - Sueding
