Summer 2026 has been the worst year for forest fires in France since 1949. The countryside close to Bordeaux has been especially badly affected with 260,000 people forced to leave their homes. Volunteers there are fighting to keep the recently extinguished fires from flaring up again whilst in Carcassonne local people are trying to draw the lessons from the devastating blazes of 2025.
