Two fathers ask the famous generals Laches and Nicias whether their sons should train in armored combat — and the conversation turns, under Socrates' questioning, into a search for the definition of courage itself. Laches the man of action defines it as endurance; Nicias the intellectual defines it as knowledge of what is to be feared; Socrates shows that neither definition survives, and that courage cannot be separated from wisdom about good and evil. The dialogue ends, characteristically, in aporia — the honest admission of not knowing — which is exactly where Socratic philosophy begins. ✍️ ABOUT PLATO Plato (427–347 BCE) was a student of Socrates and the teacher of Aristotle — the central figure in the transmission of Greek philosophy to Western civilization.
