Against the notion that piety means withdrawing from commerce, Ghazali argues that lawful earning is a duty and, done rightly, a form of worship: he surveys the six contracts at the heart of trade, draws the line between profit and exploitation, and closes with the portrait of a merchant whose stall in the market never costs him his place in the hereafter.
