In 1997, a junior developer at Sun was tasked with driving adoption for the Java Server and formalising the servlet spec — not through a closed process, but by rallying industry players like IBM, BEA, and WebLogic alongside the open-source community. What began internally under the project name "Tomcat" (released externally as the Java Servlet Web Development Kit) became a real-world testbed for open, visible-source collaboration, contributing real-world experiences into what became the Java Community Process. Decades later, Tomcat remains one of the most widely used server technologies in the Java world.
