http://www.tomrichey.net In this introduction to my lecture series on Women and the French Revolution, I focus on the sexist attitudes toward women that confined women to the domestic sphere in Early Modern Europe. Although Europe had experienced the Enlightenment, eighteenth century Europeans still held onto biblical and classical ideas from the ancient world that cast women as corrupting influences. In this lecture series, I will go on to explore the French Revolution and the birth of the modern feminist movement through the eyes of four different women: Marie Antoinette, Olympe de Gouges, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Charlotte Corday.
