Plato wanted The Odyssey banned. He lost -- and philosophy has been fighting about this poem ever since. While Christopher Nolan's adaptation fills every IMAX screen on earth, this video tells the older story: how one fantastical poem about a man trying to get home created the problems philosophy exists to solve. Xenophanes called its gods a scandal. Plato banished it, then wrote fan fiction about its hero. Aristotle used it to prove that stories can think. Cicero heard what the Sirens were really offering. Dante sent Odysseus to Hell, Nietzsche recruited him against Plato, Adorno blamed him for the modern world, and Levinas put his homecoming on trial. And in the worst place of the twentieth century, Primo Levi -- reciting half-remembered Dante over a soup pot -- showed us what the poem gives that philosophy never could. At the heart of it all, the question the poem asked first and we still can't answer: does reason save us, or deform us? And the stranger at the door — what do we owe them?
