[Episode 142] In this episode, we talk with Mr. Karl Fritze S. Sampiano, an entomologist and faculty member at Davao Oriental State University, about his study on the risks and policy responses needed for the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) invasion in the Davao Region. First detected in the Philippines in 2019, this invasive pest — native to the Americas and capable of flying up to 100 kilometers in a single night — has spread rapidly across the country's corn and rice farms. ⌛Chapters 0:00 Introduction 2:37 How a technical-vocational SHS track led him into entomology 19:41 What the fall armyworm is, and how it possibly spread from country to country 28:22 Why the larval stage does all the damage, and how much a fall armyworm can eat in a day 33:54 Why over-relying on pesticides is risky, and what integrated pest management looks like 39:31 Why more research funding is necessary 53:02 Advice to aspiring researchers 📚Reference: Sampiano KFS. 2026.
