A mate brought me a genuinely mysterious old GPS system pulled from a 2002 Toyota Prado imported from Japan, and it's unlike anything I've seen before. Check out the Blog for more photos and a detailed tear down: https://vehiclesecurity.co.nz/old-school-car-gps-tracker/ This "AVL Systems" branded unit has a windscreen-mounted antenna, a keypad for entering an immobilizer PIN code via dice symbols, and barely any info about it exists online. I power it up on the bench and then tear it apart to show you what's inside. It's a genuine surprise: a fully functional, mint-condition flip phone built right into the housing, which is how these early vehicle tracking/GPS systems apparently worked back in the day.
