In The Last of Us Part I, Joel Miller is a hardened survivor still haunted by the death of his daughter, Sarah, during the outbreak. Twenty years later, Joel is tasked with escorting Ellie, a teenage girl who is mysteriously immune to the infection, across the United States. Their journey brings them through dangerous cities, abandoned settlements, and hostile survivor groups. Joel gradually develops a father-daughter bond with Ellie, but discovers that the Fireflies believe her immunity could lead to a cure. Creating a vaccine would require Ellie to die during surgery. Unable to lose another daughter, Joel rescues Ellie and kills the Firefly leaders, including the surgeon who would have operated on her. He then lies to Ellie, claiming there was no possibility of creating a cure. The Last of Us Part II takes place several years later. Ellie now lives in Jackson, Wyoming, but Joel's past eventually catches up with him. Abby Anderson, whose father was the surgeon Joel killed, tracks Joel down and kills him in front of Ellie. Devastated and consumed by revenge, Ellie travels to Seattle with Dina to hunt Abby and the members of her group. The story then shifts to Abby, revealing her own struggles and her growing bond with Lev, a young Seraphite she protects. After the two sides repeatedly clash, Ellie ultimately finds Abby again in California, where Abby has been captured and tortured. Despite having the opportunity to kill her, Ellie finally lets Abby live.
