TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Max Scheler on Philosophical Anthropology and History Thursday 22 August 2024 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Max Ferdinand Scheler (22 August 1874 – 19 May 1928), who was born in Munich on this date in 1874. Scheler argued that a philosophical anthropology is a necessary preliminary for a philosophy of history because a conception of history follows from a conception of man. He outlined five conceptions of man and their associated conceptions of history, but didn’t live long enough to give a definitive statement of his own views, which were still developing at the time of his death.
