In 1976, 16-year-old Trenny Gibson vanished from a Great Smoky Mountains National Park trail. On a horticulture class field trip, she walked ahead of her classmates, just half a mile from their bus. In the few seconds her friends looked away, Trenny disappeared without a trace, never to be seen again. An immediate and extensive search began, involving dog teams, volunteers, and park staff combing some of the most rugged terrain in the eastern U.S. Strangely, search dogs tracked her scent not into the wilderness, but towards a road, where it abruptly ended, suggesting a possible vehicle departure. Despite decades of effort, no suspect, no vehicle, and no remains have ever been found. Trenny's case echoes other unexplained disappearances in these mountains, including that of six-year-old Dennis Martin years earlier. Local folklore speaks of ancient, unsettling figures in the deep timber, though none are proven.
