Currently Playing: A Conversation with Theranos Whistleblower Tyler Shultz | The Program for Leadership and Character

During a conversation in September 2025, Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz told the Program for Leadership and Character’s Senior Executive Director Michael Lamb about the scariest part of going public. “I knew with 100% certainty that I was right. There was no doubt in my mind,” Shultz said. “The scary part was, I didn't think that mattered.” Shultz faced a high-powered Theranos legal team with enough resources to make him, and his family, spend all of their money defending themselves. “It really seemed like the only thing that mattered in our legal system was how much money you could spend. The truth counted for nothing. The only thing that mattered was that you could buy the truth.” Shultz, who visited Wake Forest University over two days for a public talk co-sponsored by the School of Business, a class visit, and more, also spent an hour in conversation with Lamb. The inaugural video is the first in an upcoming series of compelling conversations about how character plays a key role in navigating situations both big and small. In their conversation, Lamb and Shultz talked about hope in the face of despair, the conditions inside Theranos, the upbringing that formed Shultz’s character, the personal toll of being a whistleblower, and the advice he has for others. “What I learned is that the truth does count for a lot,” Shultz said. “It just takes a painfully, painfully long time.” Learn more about Tyler Shultz at: https://www.tyler-shultz.com/ For more information about the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University, visit https://leadershipandcharacter.wfu.edu/
