After spending nine days trapped in a hydropower tunnel with his coworker, a man is sharing his experience of surviving the catastrophic floods that swept across Nepal after a glacial collapse in August. “It was so dark inside the tunnel I don't know how to describe it,” Kabir Maharjan told reporters Monday — over three weeks after he was rescued by the Nepali Army on Sept. 4, 2026. Maharjan and his mechanic foreman Sanjay Sah were believed to be among the 1,450+ people who were buried and killed during the catastrophe. Laying in a pool of muddy water, surrounded by darkness, a delirious Maharjan drifted in and out of consciousness for over a week in tunnel 3A as he waited to be rescued. Sometimes I get startled, to be honest,” the 46-year-old said. “I request to keep a small light lit when I sleep nowadays,” he added. One month after the floods, 5,000 people are unaccounted for and considered missing, the UN says.
