Watch the official music video for “By the Way” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, the lead single and title track from their 2002 album By the Way. Combining the band’s signature funk rock energy with melodic alternative rock, the song became one of their defining hits of the early 2000s, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart. 🔔 Subscribe to Red Hot Chili Peppers: https://youtube.com/c/RedHotChiliPeppers/?sub_confirmation=1 Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the official music video follows Anthony Kiedis as he becomes trapped in a taxi driven by an increasingly erratic fan, leading to a chaotic chase through the streets of Los Angeles. Featuring bandmates Flea, John Frusciante, and Chad Smith, the video captures the band’s offbeat humor and visual storytelling during one of their most successful eras. Released in 2002 and produced by longtime collaborator Rick Rubin, By the Way marked a shift toward a more melodic, harmony-driven sound, with John Frusciante’s layered guitar arrangements playing a central role. The album also features some of the band’s most recognizable recordings, including “Can’t Stop,” “The Zephyr Song,” and “Universally Speaking.” “By the Way” also introduces Dani, a recurring character in Anthony Kiedis’ songwriting who would later become the central figure in the band’s 2006 hit “Dani California” from Stadium Arcadium. The connection links two major periods of the band’s catalog, following the success of Californication and leading into Stadium Arcadium.
