Where do garden birds sleep during cold winter nights, and how can we help them survive freezing temperatures, wind and severe weather? We often think about feeding our garden birds throughout winter, but providing somewhere safe and sheltered to roost can be just as important. In this video, wildlife garden designer Joel Ashton explores how small garden birds cope with cold nights, why winter shelter matters, and how a specially designed winter bird roost box can help provide a protected place to rest. Joel also introduces the newly updated Wild Your Garden Winter Roost Box, a design he originally developed to offer practical shelter for small garden birds. Unlike a conventional nesting box, which is primarily designed for raising young, this roost box has features specifically intended for winter shelter, including a lower-positioned entrance to help reduce heat loss and internal wooden perches that allow several small birds to shelter together. Birds such as wrens, tits and sparrows all need somewhere safe to spend the night, particularly during periods of prolonged cold or severe weather. Joel takes a closer look at the design, shows the internal structure and explains the thinking behind the entrance position, perches and overall construction. Our best-selling winter roost box has now returned with a smarter new black finish, while retaining the practical features of the original design. 🐦 EXPLORE THE WILD YOUR GARDEN WINTER ROOST BOX Available here: https://www.wildyourgarden.com/ Wildlife-friendly gardening isn't only about what we plant. Providing shelter, water, food and safe places for wildlife throughout the changing seasons can make our gardens much more valuable habitats. Whether you're creating a wildlife garden from scratch or simply looking for another way to help the birds visiting your garden, we hope this video offers some useful inspiration. If you've ever discovered small birds roosting together in your garden, perhaps in ivy, a nest box or a sheltered corner, we'd love to hear about it in the comments.
